Crystal Cabin Award 2022: With its Smart Lock Door, Diehl Aviation participates in the final round of the category Material and Components. On June 14, the sought-after trophy for outstanding innovations in the aircraft cabin field will be awarded for the 16th time in Hamburg.

The finalists for this year's 16th Crystal Cabin Award have been selected. Diehl Aviation's Smart Lock Door is one of three finalists in the category Material and Components. The Crystal Cabin Award is the leading international innovation award in the aircraft cabin field. Since 2007, it has been presented annually at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg. The award recognizes outstanding cabin products and concepts.

"We are proud and excited to have reached the final round of the Crystal Cabin Award. This shows that our efforts have paid off. With Smart Lock Door we have yet again developed an innovation which attracts a great deal of interest," states a happy Harald Mehring, Chief Customer Officer at Diehl Aviation. In the future, the Smart Lock Door will enable crews to safely stow their handheld devices within sight, while charging them and simultaneously operating them at any time via the open user interface.

The smart lockable door can be easily integrated into any cabin monument and compartment. Thus, valuable storage space on board, for example in the tightly packed galley, is not lost. The operation could not be easier: The terminal device is simply pushed behind the Smart Lock Door into the charger and the door is locked. The door is opened via a human machine interface with an RFID chip or a numerical code. The chip can be integrated into a key card or directly into the employee's ID card.

Keyless access allows flexible adjustment of locking authorizations and immediate blocking of lost badges. This ensures maximum security against misuse anytime. The Smart Lock Door can be easily retrofitted and adapted to different terminal sizes. Requiring only mechanical interfaces and a simple power supply, the system can be installed and used in all aircraft types.

With the Smart Lock Door, Diehl Aviation has developed a solution for airlines whose flight attendants only use handheld devices such as tablets or smartphones for work. Their digital devices provide access to relevant information like menu plans, service procedures, manuals, duty schedules, and important notifications anytime. The Smart Lock Door is not only an intelligent onboard solution for terminal devices but also a secure storage option for crew members' valuables and is therefore a hot contender for the title.
