Integrated Modular Avionics
From many computers to one: Diehl Aviation's Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) technology bundles dozens of aircraft functions into one flexible, modular device, offering reduced weight, greater reliability and maximum innovation speed.
Avionics systems are undergoing disruption. In the 2000s, functions such as temperature control, hydraulics and fuel management were managed by different computers. Nowadays, a single device can cover dozens of such functions. This technology is called Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA), and Diehl Aviation is a pioneer in its development and implementation.
IMA devices are modular and flexible in design, and can be programmed to perform a wide variety of functions within an aircraft. When used in combination, for example on board modern long-haul aircraft, they cover the majority of avionics functions.
The key advantages of IMA
Weight Savings |
Compact, lightweight, and powerful: a single IMA unit replaces multiple traditional standalone computers. Not only does this save weight, it also cuts down on wiring – a real win for any aircraft architecture. |
Reliability |
Over 20 years of experience speak for themselves: IMA systems have logged countless flight hours reliably – low-maintenance and robust, even under the most demanding conditions. |
Compatibility |
Seamless integration with common simulation software like Matlab/Simulink makes engineers’ work easier. Systems can be tested and developed faster – time you can spend on innovation. |
Fast Operation |
IMA units meet the highest aviation safety standards. Adaptations to applications or configurations can often be implemented in just a few days – while changes to the platform itself do require certification, even here you benefit from more flexible handling compared to traditional systems. |
Open Architecture |
‘3rd-party open’: Customers can develop their own applications while running software from different vendors on a single device, without any interference between functions – a real competitive advantage in the market. |
Flexibility |
Whether airplane, helicopter, eVTOL, or drone. IMA adapts to any platform. |
Retrofit Capability |
Upgrading existing aircraft? No problem: IMA can be easily retrofitted, efficiently replacing older solutions. |
MODULAR DESIGN – TAILORED TO YOUR NEEDS
Depending on the complexity of the application, two types of units are available: The Input Output Module (IOM) is ideal for controlling relatively simple functions, such as temperature regulation or cabin pressure.
For more compute-intensive applications – like graphical rendering of map data – the Remote Computing Module (RCM) is used, offering significantly higher processing power.
Both unit types work seamlessly together: multiple IOMs, for example, collect sensor data such as outside temperature, altitude, or engine status, process it, and send it to a central RCM, which calculates a comprehensive operational picture.
ENABLER FOR NEW TECHNOLOGIES
IMA units can be used individually or in combination, laying the foundation for new technologies. For example, in Advanced Air Mobility, Diehl Aviation developed a Remote Computing Module (RCM) for the eVTOL from AUM and Skyfive, serving as a backup for the primary flight control.
The platform can run multiple independent functions in parallel and offers numerous interfaces that can be configured flexibly and independently.
Traditionally, developing new aerospace systems takes many years – mainly due to complex avionics. IMA significantly accelerates this process: the units are immediately available and can be programmed for new applications in a very short time, often within hours. A case in point is landing gear control: what previously required the development of a dedicated computer can now be implemented “plug & play” with an IMA unit. Diehl Aviation has already delivered numerous devices for this purpose, enabling fast, flexible innovation in aviation.
