Energy Efficiency Directive (EED)

To help shape a greener future, the EED imposes a number of obligations on utilities and submetering companies, including making measuring devices remotely readable. Make sure your network complies both now and in the future.

New legal regulations for a greener future

The EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) aims to reduce energy consumption to help shape a greener future. The directive, which consists of different steps, introduces a number of requirements that impact utilities and submetering companies. The two main obligations are that hot water and energy meters, as well as heat cost allocators, must be remotely readable; and consumers must be provided with insights into their energy consumption during the year. The purpose of these measures? Make consumers more aware of their consumption habits and motivate them to adopt energy-efficient behavior.

An urgent need to consume less

Across the EU, heating and cooling in buildings is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions, accounting for half of all energy consumed. Furthermore, heating and hot water alone account for 79% of total final energy consumption in EU households. The EED is therefore seen as a key element in helping to achieve the EU’s overall objective of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, and becoming climate neutral by 2050.

The revised version of the directive entered into force at the end of 2018. It establishes a roadmap for a 32.5% reduction in energy consumption within the EU by 2030, relative to consumption projections made in 2007.

How does this affect utilities and submetering companies? It means their measuring devices for heating, cooling and hot water must be EED-compliant at every phase of the directive. Ultimately, all measuring devices in their network must be remotely readable by 2027.

Your partner for every step of EED compliance

The major objective of the EED is to empower consumers to adopt more sustainable behavior. At Diehl Metering, that same philosophy is at the heart of all our solutions. We provide utilities and submetering companies with a complete range of smart metering solutions that not only deliver future-proof EED compliance; they also create new opportunities to drive greater efficiency and sustainability.

To comply with the EED need for reliable remote reading of consumption data, you can choose a Walk-by/Drive-by solution, enabling you to use a portable receiver to take meter readings simply by walking or driving past consumers’ homes. Or you can opt for a Fixed Network solution, which uses a stationary receiver to collect and automatically transmit device data. This allows you to clearly view the different data in our IZAR Meter Data Management software, and generate bills by exporting readings to your billing software.

And with our consumer smartphone app IZAR@HOME, you can fulfil the requirement to provide regular consumption information to individual households throughout the year. Through this easy-to-use tool, consumers can follow their consumption during the year and compare their monthly data with peer groups for benchmarking. It’s the motivation they need to change their consumption habits and help save precious natural resources.

In addition to providing EED compliance, our smart metering solutions empower you to get a fuller picture of your network and identify anomalies such as leakages, faulty devices or inefficient heating/cooling distribution. In this way, you can further enhance your overall energy efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable future.
