A connector which is not placed correctly on a contact heats up and may catch fire. This risk is particularly high when high currents flow as is the case, for example, in electric-motor electronics.

Description:

A plug that is not properly plugged into a contact heats up and can possibly ignite. This danger is particularly pronounced when high currents flow, for example in the electronics of electric motors.

Commercially available plugs have neither a temperature monitor nor a bimetal switch. In order to prevent such plugs from burning, temperature verification is carried out in the application during the development stage.

In this case, an unexpectedly occurring unbalance or an unexpectedly increased current flow can still lead to high temperatures in the connector.

This danger due to improperly contacted plugs can be prevented in various ways. For example, a bimetal switch (Klixon), a temperature sensor or a temperature cut-off switch can be integrated (moulded) into the plug, which interrupts the current flow at a certain temperature.

Plugs with temperature cut-off can have one or two switches.

A cost-effective variant is a plug with only one temperature switch. However, an additional software-based detection of the phase ("loss of phase") is required for a safe switch-off.

A plug with two integrated temperature switches enables safe shutdown in the event of dangerous overheating; additional protection by software is not required. Since a second temperature switch is required, the costs are higher than for the variant with only one temperature switch.
