Supplier secures order for the development and production of the new Airspace XL Bins with 20 percent more stowage capacity.

Major supplier Diehl Aviation has been commissioned by Airbus, a leading aircraft manufacturer, to develop and produce new overhead bins for the Airbus A220. The new overhead bins – called Airspace XL Bins – provide 20 percent more stowage capacity than the previous overhead bins on board the aircraft, giving passengers more space for their hand luggage and personal items and thus, greater comfort. The straightforward and cost-effective design of the overhead bins, which require only the lid flap to be opened, is reliable and easy to maintain.

Diehl Aviation’s winning solution is characterized not only by high quality and reliability but also by an excellent cost-benefit ratio. The new overhead bins are weight optimized and also include the accompanying air-conditioning ducting with its air outlets in the vicinity of the overhead bins.

The new overhead bins, which will be available in several versions, are now entering the development phase. Production is scheduled to start in early 2024. All future A220 cabins will ultimately be equipped with the new overhead bins. It is also planned to offer them for retrofit.

"Responding to customer needs, the new Airspace XL Bins for the A220 will give passengers more stowage space and overall make the A220 cabin even more attractive," said Harald Mehring, Chief Customer Officer of Diehl Aviation. "The order is particularly important for us because this is the first time that we have been represented with our solutions on the A220. We are very excited to be working with the Airbus A220 team."
