Diehl Aviation, a leading supplier of cabin interiors and avionics systems for the aviation industry, will showcase its latest innovations at the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) Berlin from June 22 to 26, 2022.

ILA Berlin, the largest and most important aerospace trade show in Europe, is back after a forced break due to Covid. This year, more than 1,000 international exhibitors will present the latest aircraft, technologies and solutions for the future of aviation - all in tune with the theme "Pioneering Aerospace". This time, the central topics are defense and security, sustainability and urban air mobility.

Diehl Aviation will be exhibiting its latest innovations at several booths this year: Main focus is on the joint booth along with Diehl Defence in Hall 4, Booth 220. In addition, the company will be showcasing some of its product innovations at the ILA Future Lab and at the Military Support Center, a cooperation between the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) and private industry, and presenting its avionics expertise for FCAS.

Innovation excellence for climate-neutral aviation

Diehl Aviation considers itself an enabler of eco-efficient flying. This year, the company demonstrates this with several eco-efficient product innovations for aircraft cabins, which will be introduced medially at the trade show booth. The solutions primarily work toward weight reduction. Similarly, they also offer ecological advantages in the manufacturing process or - in the case of special air ducts, for example - are characterized by improved recyclability.

With the Grey Water Reuse Unit, an eco-efficient system has been developed that reduces freshwater consumption on board commercial aircraft and thus contributes significantly to weight reduction. In 2021, Diehl Aviation's Grey Water Reuse Unit already won the Crystal Cabin Award in the category Greener Cabin, Health, Safety & Environment!

High expertise in avionics

Diehl Aviation demonstrates its high level of systems expertise at the ILA not only in the cabin, but once again in state-of-the-art avionics platform solutions of the integrated modular avionics (IMA), these also within the FCAS program. The IMA concept developed by Diehl is a modular computer-based electronic unit consisting of standardized components and unified interfaces. It enables the multiple use of computer units for different systems and functions, thus saving space, weight and costs and ensuring that the various systems are able to communicate with each other in the aircraft. Diehl now intends to further extend its many years of experience in commercial and military aircraft in the field of the scalable and easy-to-integrate IMA concept to electric air taxis.

In addition, Diehl Aviation and its partners will present the already completed research project "Intelligent & Smart Cabin" (i+sCabin). The project has been essential in defining the standards for connected cabin functions, such as communication standards, the framework for wireless sensor networks, various smart galley functions and status monitoring.

Extensive knowledge of all-electric air taxis

As a pioneer of innovative cabin interiors and active electronic controls, Diehl also has the knowledge and manufacturing expertise with regard to small electric air taxis of the future. Diehl combines lightweight construction with redundant safety and provides ultimately for highest passenger comfort and a pleasant flight experience. Areas of expertise include flight control and the battery management system as well as cabin components and functions. Visitors will be able to experience first-hand what this looks like at the expo booth by taking a look at an air taxi demonstrator developed by Diehl.

A new generation of smart cabins

What applies to eVTOLs is already standard for commercial aircraft. Even so, the digitalization of the cabin continues to progress here as well. Diehl will present two of its innovations at the ILA Future Lab: the enhanced Smart Galley and the Power Line Communication. In addition to the Crystal Cabin finalist Smart Lock Door, the enhanced Smart Galley also includes a modern galley controller that allows the galley to be integrated into a modern cabin network. Based on new cabin communication architectures, both on-board and maintenance personnel as well as passengers will benefit from many different intelligent additional functions in the future. The galley also features a space-saving and efficient cooling and sealing concept that saves energy as well as reducing noise levels, thus enhancing passenger comfort.

The second solution Diehl will be showing at the ILA Future Lab is the  Power Line Communication (PLC). The project is the result of a cooperation between Diehl Aerospace and the University of Lucerne. The steadily increasing comfort and the higher number of systems in the cabin also increase the complexity of the wiring, which is reduced by around a third with PLC, thus optimizing space requirements and reducing weight. PLC ensures the greatest possible security and speed in data transport and consequently acts as an enabler for the smart cabin of the future.

Solutions for military requirements

Apart from its innovations for commercial aviation, Diehl Aviation is also demonstrating its expertise in military applications this year: For example, the MULTIBASE system developed by aviation and defense technology specialist AUTOFLUG has been complemented by special cabin solutions from Diehl Aviation. These include a soundproof crew rest compartment for up to four people, an individually configurable galley as well as complete on-board toilets that can be easily installed in the cargo hold of military transport vehicles such as the MedEvac and can be operated without being connected to the on-board power supply. Visitors will find a small module at the Diehl booth and a larger one at AUTOFLUG in Hall 4, Booth 252. In addition, original modules will also be exhibited on the static display directly next to the A400M (booth number S3-100). More from Diehl on aircraft equipment and mission readiness can be found at the Military Support Center (MSC) in Hall 3.

Runway for talent: the Career Center

Two digital formats for young professionals, trainees and graduates have been available since May: The SkyCareer virtual career center and the digital ILA Career Hub. Here, interested parties can meet and get to know their favorite and top employers from the aerospace industry, such as Diehl Aviation, in more detail. Diehl Aviation's HR experts will be available as a central point of contact until the last day of ILA, June 26, 2022, to provide information about the wide range of entry-level positions and opportunities at Diehl.
