Diehl Metering has implemented a fixed network solution to support HOFOR in its vision of creating sustainable cities and towns within the Greater Copenhagen area. The utility has particularly high standards in sustainability and chose our smart metering solution for the areas of Rødovre and Herlev to benefit from reduced water waste and efficient resource consumption.

Within the Copenhagen area, HOFOR is responsible for supplying around one million consumers with drinking water and managing their wastewater disposal. It also supplies the citizens of Copenhagen with district heating, district cooling, and town gas, mainly using renewable energy sources. To strengthen its network efficiency and boost sustainability, the utility wanted to consolidate its existing setup by adding a network of ultrasonic water meters. Diehl Metering was chosen to supply the areas of Rødovre and Herlev.

Our solution consists of a fixed network with IZAR RDC Premium radio receivers and HYDRUS ultrasonic water meters, complemented by our web-based IZAR PLUS Portal as the Meter Data Management Software. This met the utility’s requirements, including its demand for a battery life of 14 years, and the capacity to generate hourly data that is read remotely. The new HYDRUS 2.0 meters even allow data to be gathered in hard-to-reach locations thanks to their excellent radio performance and coverage. We also provided consulting services for the installation phase of the new network. As a bonus, IZAR PLUS Portal interfaces automatically with HOFOR’s billing system.

For Gorm Elikofer, Chief Customer Officer at HOFOR, remote metering delivers several key benefits: “Remote meter reading will make life easier for our customers, and it’s also an effective tool for minimizing resource consumption”, he says. “We are working on using it to detect system errors faster and significantly reduce wasted water. This will benefit both our customers, our economy and, most importantly, the climate.”

To manufacture the HYDRUS meters and IZAR RDC radio receivers, Diehl Metering’s factories relied on an energy mix that is mainly renewables. Our sites in Ansbach and Nuremberg also recycle surplus heat from the production process and from offices – ensuring the overall solution for HOFOR was even more sustainable.
