New opportunities in sub-metering through smart metering

Changing consumer expectations and new legislation are driving a shift in sub-metering.

In multi-family homes, billing based on estimates or square meters may once have been acceptable, but it is increasingly perceived as unfair. Today, consumers living in different apartments expect their bill to reflect their actual consumption. This trend is accompanied by new legislation such as the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), which makes it mandatory to enable remote meter reading in the field of sub-metering. It also requires consumers to be provided with data about their hot water and heating/cooling consumption on a monthly basis.

At Diehl Metering, we can help you meet these challenges and requirements. We have more than 150 years of experience in metering technology, including over 30 years in ultrasonic technology and more than 25 years in radio technology. With around 7 million meters produced every year, our installed base totals more than 40 million meters and 54 million radio modules worldwide. Through our smart metering solutions, you’ll be able to meet regulations and consumer expectations for many years to come. You’ll also benefit from our consulting, system installation, training and support services. All from a single source.

Walk-by/Drive-by Walk-by/Drive-by

Mobile reading for error-free billing

With our Walk-by/Drive-by solution, you can collect consumption data from different households without having to enter a single apartment. Simply pass by the communal parts of the building on foot or by vehicle to collect all the consumption data you need for individual billing. The benefits? You’ll save time while eliminating the potential errors of manual readings. And you’ll no longer need to schedule appointments with tenants and oblige them to be at home to read their meters.

Walk-by/Drive-by provides a quick, easy and convenient way to read meters and sensors through a portable receiver that automatically collects data. You can even configure our measuring devices to save consumption data on individually-preset due dates, allowing you to read them at a later date.

With our IZAR@MOBILE 2 software, remote readings are intuitive and easy to understand. For optimal performance, we recommend running the application on an IZAR@MOBILE 2 TABLET – but you can also install the software on a variety of Windows-based devices. With the help of a map view and an intuitive touchscreen, you’ll be able to manage every step of meter reading on the go. You’ll also be able to plan your billing route effectively by directly importing and exporting the meter reading tour via an XLSX interface. In combination with our meter data management (MDM) software – IZAR@NET 2 if installed on your server or IZAR PLUS Portal if you prefer software as a service – you’ll be able to plan tours centrally and optimize the reading process. After synchronization with IZAR@PLUS Portal or IZAR@NET 2, the data will be compatible with all common billing systems – for error-free billing.

Are you ready to comply with the EED?

The EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) has a significant impact on sub-metering. To help reduce energy consumption, it imposes two main obligations on your activity: measuring devices must be remotely readable; and consumers must be given regular insights into their energy consumption during the year.

These requirements are introduced step by step over a period of several years. The best way to ensure you are EED compliant? Future-proof your network now!

At Diehl Metering, our solutions provide you with EED compliance both now and in the future.

You can choose from our Walk-by/Drive-by or fixed network solution. Both empower you to take remote readings and collect the data necessary to provide regular consumption information to end consumers. You can even enhance your offer to consumers with our IZAR@HOME smartphone app, an easy-to-use tool that allows them to track their consumption throughout the year.

Our smart metering solutions will also help you improve your energy efficiency, contributing to greater sustainability. And because our solutions all use the OMS standard, you can be sure of optimal flexibility as you grow your network in the future.

Fixed network Fixed network

Fully automatic remote reading for unrivalled convenience

If you’re managing large properties, our fixed network solution offers you an efficient way to automatically collect individual consumption data, even under the most challenging conditions. With a fixed network, you’ll benefit from fully automatic remote reading of all your communicating water and heat meters, as well as heat cost allocators and other sensors compatible with the Open Metering System (OMS) standard. The main benefit? You’ll save time and allow your staff to focus on tasks other than data collection. What’s more, you’ll be able to take more frequent meter readings without additional efforts and costs.

To implement a fixed network, permanent receivers are installed in your building. These capture and send measurement data at definable intervals to your meter data management (MDM) software – IZAR@NET 2 if installed on your server or IZAR PLUS Portal if you prefer software as a service. You can then retrieve the readings whenever you want and easily export them to your billing software. You can also take interim readings, which are necessary if there is a change of tenant during the year. Thanks to high data granularity and timeliness, you’ll also benefit from a smart analysis of your network. With the right network set-up, you can configure your IZAR MDM software to display alarms about potential leaks or meter malfunctions. Through these intelligent features, you’ll limit water and energy losses, boost the sustainability of your building, and reduce the risk of costly damage.

Using the same system infrastructure, you can easily add electronic heat cost allocators to determine the heating consumption of each radiator relative to total consumption in the building. To provide your tenants with a comprehensive service, you can easily integrate additional devices such as temperature and humidity sensors, whenever you like. Furthermore, it’s possible to enable up to bi-weekly monitoring of integrated OMS-compatible smoke detectors, ensuring the detectors are all functioning properly to increase tenant safety.

Wired M-Bus Wired M-Bus

Wired remote reading for ease of use in certain buildings

If your building is already equipped with a suitable infrastructure or if its structure is unconducive to radio-based data transmission, our Meter-Bus (M-Bus) wired solution is the best fit.

Using M-Bus, the industry standard for wired networking, we connect the different devices in your network by cable to deliver fast, accurate remote readings. You’ll save time collecting data, be able to rely on error-free readings for reliable billing, and free tenants from the obligation of being at home for meter readings.

Thanks to our IZAR Center, you can take regular readings from up to 250 devices, and multiple IZAR Centers can easily be used to scale up your network at any time. All data is transmitted via internet to your IZAR meter data management software as regularly as you want. And thanks to your IZAR software’s intelligent analyses, you’ll benefit from alarms in case of leaks or device anomalies, enabling you to react quicker, limit potential damage to your network, and increase tenant satisfaction.
