WHAT IS EARTH OVERSHOOT DAY AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Earth Overshoot Day 2025 falls on July 24, the date when humanity has used up all the resources Earth can regenerate in a year. From this point forward, we live in ecological debt depleting forests, overfishing oceans, and emitting more CO₂ than ecosystems can absorb.
This year’s date is seven days earlier than in 2024, largely due to revised data on ocean carbon sequestration and increased per capita consumption. It’s a stark reminder that our current trajectory is unsustainable.
DIEHL METERING’S COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
At Diehl Metering, sustainability is more than a goal, it’s our responsibility. We recognize that natural resource management is not just an environmental issue, it’s a strategic imperative. Our sustainability strategy is deeply embedded in our operations and closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We focus on four key pillars:
- Responsible economic growth
- Ethical governance
- Environmental stewardship
- Social well-being
Our efforts are validated through certifications and independent evaluations such as ISO (ISO 45001 and more recently ISO 50001) and EcoVadis, ensuring transparency and accountability.
OUR 7 PRIORITY PROGRAMS: SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
Among our 7 priority programs, Management of Resources is aimed at reducing our ecological footprint and achieving carbon neutrality. This program targets:
- Lower energy, water, and raw material consumption,
- Smarter infrastructure (lighting, heating, mobility),
- Responsible logistics and supply chains.
Within Management of resources we combine sustainable site management with a green production and supply chain approach. It is our duty to find continuously improvements to reduce Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 to reach a CO₂ neutrality as fast as possible. With a bunch of achievements like bio-mass based heating, optimized shipping solutions or waste heat recovery we are strongly going forward to reach this target day by day.

CONCRETE RESULTS: FROM STRATEGY TO ACTION
Energy efficiency gains
Between 2022 and 2023, we achieved a 7% reduction in energy consumption. Our 2024 targets are on track:
Site-specific achievements
-
Saint-Louis, France: Connected to district heating → CO₂ emissions cut from 88 to 14 tons/year.
- Ansbach, Germany: New biomass heating system → CO₂ emissions reduced from 261 to 20 tons/year.
Logistics optimization
We are:
- Reducing intermediate deliveries
- Maximizing container loads
- Expanding CO₂-neutral transport partnerships
2024 SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
We continue to invest in sustainable infrastructure:
-
Upgraded compressed air systems with heat recovery,
-
New ventilation systems,
-
More EV charging stations,
-
LED lighting across facilities,
-
Increased share of renewable energy in procurement.
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW
Earth Overshoot Day is not just a date, it’s a warning. We are taking measurable steps to reverse the trend. But we can’t do it alone. Sustainability is a shared journey, and we invite our customers, partners, and employees to join us in building a more resilient future.
HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN BUSINESS TODAY?
Every decision we make can contribute to a more sustainable future. Here are some practical actions we’re taking and that you can plan for too:
-
Choose sustainable suppliers: Partner with vendors who show proven commitment to sustainability through certifications, transparency, and ethical practices.
-
Reduce consumption: Audit your operations to identify where energy, water, or materials can be used more efficiently. Less waste, more value.
-
Cut waste, not performance: Use smart metering and real-time monitoring to track energy usage and take immediate action to reduce excess.
-
Support green transport: Optimize your supply chain by reducing unnecessary deliveries and choosing low-emission logistics partners.
-
Engage your team: Foster a culture of sustainability by involving employees in green initiatives and recognizing eco-conscious behavior.
Together, we can make a difference and build a more sustainable future for all.
