AWA-Ammersee: Reducing Non-Revenue Water with Smart Metering and Water Loss Management

Water is a valuable resource — and protecting it starts with visibility.

Serving seven municipalities in Bavaria’s Fünfseenland region, AWA-Ammersee is transforming its water infrastructure with smart metering, remote reading and Water Loss Management solutions from Diehl Metering. The goal: reducing non-revenue water, eliminating manual processes and enabling earlier detection of leakages across the entire distribution network.

  • Smart Metering & Remote Reading

Full AMI rollout across all customer meters across the entire service area

All customer meters were upgraded with radio technology, connected via a robust Fixed Network architecture. Large water meters at strategic measurement points across the distribution network complete the picture – providing continuous, automated data collection without manual intervention.

    IZAR PLUS Portal Software

Centralized meter data management for utilities

Diehl Metering’s IZAR PLUS Portal consolidates all consumption data in one place, enabling centralized visualization, analysis and reporting. Billing workflows are largely automated through a direct interface to accounting systems – significantly reducing administrative effort and improving billing accuracy.

  • Water Loss Management

AI-driven, real-time zone-level network monitoring for earlier NRW detection

The Water Loss Management software monitors the network continuously. An interactive zone map gives operators an immediate overview of potential leakages – enabling fast, targeted responses before losses escalate.

  • IZAR@HOME

    Consumption transparency for end customers

The IZAR@HOME app gives residents near real-time access to their personal water consumption date. Push notifications keep customers informed about maintenance work, while smart home integration allows consumption data to be used alongside other home energy management tools.

We know exactly what goes into the network and what should come out. But the area in between remained a blind spot – yet this is exactly where the information is needed to identify potential pipe bursts and water losses.

    Maximilian Bleimaier, Board Member, AWA-Ammersee

AWA-Ammersee already operated a well-structured network of metered zones. However, detailed consumption data between annual readings remained largely unavailable – a common challenge for water utilities still relying on manual meter reading and mechanical meters.

Leakage detection based on night-time minimum flow analysis was only partially reliable: apparent anomalies could just as easily be caused by night-time pool fillings as by an actual pipe fault. Some meters, installed in frequently flooded manholes, added further operational challenges. The result was an incomplete picture of network performance – and growing non-revenue water losses that were difficult to locate or quantify.

  • Building the foundation for modern Water Loss Management

Together with Diehl Metering, AWA-Ammersee implemented a connected ecosystem for remote meter reading and real-time network monitoring. All customer meters were upgraded with radio technology, while large water meters were installed at strategic measurement points across the distribution network. Data is transmitted through a Fixed Network architecture providing continuous coverage across the entire service area.

One distinctive element of the project is the solution developed for Lake Ammersee itself. An antenna station was installed on a paddle steamer of the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt. It extends data collection across the entire lakeshore whenever the steamer is in operation. A practical response to the specific geography of the region.

Customer consumption data is centrally managed, visualized and billed through the IZAR PLUS Portal – Diehl Metering’s meter data management platform. In parallel, the AI-driven Water Loss

The vision of reducing water losses has accompanied me for more than ten years. When Diehl Metering introduced their Water Loss Management software, it was exactly the solution I had imagined.

Robert Enthaler, Deputy Technical Manager, AWA-Ammersee

With the new smart metering system in place, AWA-Ammersee now has near real-time visibility across its entire network. Automated remote reading eliminates the need for manual meter reading, significantly reducing operational costs and freeing up resources. Billing processes are largely automated, improving accuracy and reducing non-revenue water from administrative losses.

Most importantly, continuous monitoring improves network transparency and enables earlier identification of anomalies and potential leakages – helping protect valuable water resources before losses escalate.

The digital transformation also benefits end customers directly. Through the IZAR@HOME app, residents gain near real-time access to their water consumption data, receive push notifications for maintenance work and can integrate usage data into smart home environments.
