Thermal batteries are used almost exclusively in high-tech / high reliability applications primarily for the military and aeronautic sectors. Their major advantages are long storage life with no self-discharge, maintenance free item, high energy density and rapid voltage rise time after activation. In addition they are capable of surviving extremely rugged mechanical environments.
The distinctive feature of the thermal battery is the inorganic salt electrolyte mixture which is non-conductive at ambient temperatures. At activation the integral pyrotechnic material melts the electrolyte which then is highly conductive and energy can be drawn from the battery cells.
For many years Diehl & Eagle-Picher has been a qualified manufacturer and supplier of thermal batteries for both build-to-print programs and also using our own in-house developed designs. Our list of customers include organizations / companies such as NSPA, Raytheon, Diehl Defence, Lockheed, MBDA, Airbus, Leonardo, NAMMO, and SAFRAN for international programs such as ESSM, IRIS-T, PATRIOT, RAM, SSTD, AASM-Hammer etc.
