Innovative solutions for sustainable water utility management

Water utilities face challenges like water scarcity, ageing infrastructure, and the need to reduce carbon footprints. Increased water treatment accelerates the wear and tear of meters and pipes. The ALTAIR V5, with its innovative design and materials, supports sustainable water management through exceptional metering performance and durability.

GREENER WATER NETWORKS WITH ECOFRIENDLY METERS

Lightweight and more compact. The ALTAIR V5 is up to 43% lighter than the ALTAIR V4, reducing material and energy consumption, thus carbon emissions.

Eco-friendly design. Reshaped, the ALTAIR V5 is also partially made of bio-sourced materials. And the new modular radio, the IZAR RC IoT clip-on,  can now be disassembled for recycling. Batteries can be processed through suitable channels, and plastic parts separated for recycling.

Long-Lasting and Sustainable. More resistant to wear and blockages thanks to its new design, ALTAIR V5 lasts longer at peak performance, securing your investment.

MODULAR IOT: GROW AT YOUR OWN PACE

AMR or AMI? Choose flexibility! Easily upgradable with the IZAR clip-on module, ALTAIR V5 offers a large range of possibilities for sending data remotely.  IZAR’s modularity and flexibility allows you to choose mobile walk-by, drive-by and passive drive-by,as well as a stationary fixed network – or any combination of the four.

Ready for smart city applications. The IZAR clip-on modules enable automatic reading transmission, creating an accurate and objective database for billing and advanced features like leak detection. To ensure a smooth integration in your system, it is available in multiple connectivity standards:

EFFECTIVELY REDUCE WATER LOSSES

Count even a dripping tap. The ALTAIR V5 has been MID-approved up to R1000. With its eco-friendly design, it boasts a low flow rate of 0.2 l/h and maintains long-lasting accuracy, making it efficient for measuring all types of water consumption. When it is coupled with advanced softwarethe ALTAIR V5 will even detect hide leaks, the ones that nobody noticed but generate a constant volume of water losses, before deterioration.

Measuring Reliability. Its increased resistance to chlorine and blockages, as well as its large filtration surface, guarantees long-term smooth operation and a long service life. Tamper-proof (resistant to tampering, magnet-proof and snap-proof with sealing ring), it ensures information is always reliable.

A wealth of data. Thanks to its IZAR clip-on module, ALTAIR V5 sends the data you need, at the frequency you want - from once a day to every 15 minutes. In addition to data and measurement histories, you can enhance your index with multiple alarms (fraud, temperature, leaks, etc.). All the information you need to take informed action.

METROLOGY, UNCOMPROMISED ACCURACY AND RELIABILITY

ALTAIR V5 has been developed as a continuation of the previous version to meet the new expectations of water utilities in terms of sustainable development. It guarantees precise performance while meeting eco-design criteria. This means that it not only has a lower environmental impact but also offers a significant improvement in water conservation and a safe, sustainable investment.

How is ALTAIR V5 empowering sustainability in water management?

Compared to the previous generation, ALTAIR V5 environmental impact is significantly reduced. What are the benefits for you? a minimized carbon footprint and a reduced shipping cost. As part of our commitment to provide solutions to help people make more efficient use of the planet’s natural resources, Diehl Metering has also improved the IZAR radio clip-on module reliability and recyclability. With a lifetime of up to 15 years, separable batteries and use of recycled material, the IZAR RC IoT radio is maximizing the durability of your digital water network.

FAQ: Choosing the right meter: our key answer

  • What are the environmental benefits of eco-designed water meters?

An eco-designed water meter not only has a smaller carbon footprint but also a reduced overall environmental impact. This allows water utilities to incorporate the carbon cost of updating their meter fleet into their carbon footprint calculations, while also minimizing other environmental impacts. When a company is involved in reducing its carbon footprint and finding sustainable solutions, as Diehl Metering with Ecovadis,  every network component must be evaluated.

Eco-design considers carbon emissions throughout the product's lifecycle, including manufacturing, usage, and end-of-life. Additionally, it addresses other environmental concerns such as ozone layer depletion, freshwater eutrophication, and the use of mineral resources.

This ongoing effort to minimize impact is continuously enhanced through innovations, such as new materials, and evolving regulations.

  • How does smart metering reduce carbon emissions?

Smart meters help reduce carbon emissions by preventing water loss, optimizing water production, and promoting consumer awareness and conservation.

    • Preventing water loss and optimized water production: By minimizing water loss through timely leak repairs, utilities can maintain efficient water production levels. This efficiency means that less energy is required for water treatment and distribution, directly contributing to reduced carbon emissions.
    • Consumer Engagement: Smart meters provide detailed consumption data that utilities can use to inform and engage consumers. By educating consumers about their water usage patterns and encouraging conservation practices, overall water demand can be reduced. Lower water consumption translates to less energy needed for water production and supply, further decreasing carbon emissions.
  • How to upgrade traditional water meters to IoT-enabled solutions?

Upgrading traditional water meters to IoT-enabled solutions can be achieved by adding a radio clip-on module. This module transforms conventional water meters into smart meters, enhancing their performance, reliability, and ease of operation.

    • Radio Clip-On Module:  By attaching a radio clip-on module to a traditional water meter, you can convert it into a smart meter. This module leverages advanced technologies such as LoRaWAN®, wMBus, or mioty®, which provide extended coverage and efficient data transmission. Radio configuration and index update can be done remotely (2-way communication function) or thanks to an opto head  device.
    • Flexible Operation Modes: The module can operate in both fixed network and mobile modes, with automatic switching between them. This flexibility ensures reliable data transmission regardless of the network environment.

By upgrading traditional water meters with these IoT-enabled modules, utilities can significantly improve their water management capabilities, leading to better performance, reliability, and operational efficiency.

  • Is a volumetric water meter as performant as a static one?

    There are different ways to measure water flow. Volumetric meters, like the ALTAIR V5, use a rotary piston to count water. Each piston movement represents a specific amount of water. Ultrasonic meters, like the HYDRUS 2.0, measure how fast water moves between pulses to calculate the volume. Both types of meters offer high accuracy and can provide reliable measurement data for up to 15 years. Ultrasonic meters have built-in radio capabilities, while volumetric meters need an upgrade with a clip-on radio module to become smart. When deciding between ultrasonic and volumetric meters, consider the specific needs of your application, including the environment, flow conditions, and water quality. This will help you choose the meter that best fits your requirements;
