A response to local water challenges

The US water industry is facing a number of challenges. These include water scarcity, growing maintenance costs and Non-Revenue Water. As a leading water meter manufacturer, Diehl Metering has increased its investment in the USA to help local utilities address these issues.

In 2021, we opened a dedicated assembly facility in Lisle, Illinois. Now, we have inaugurated a new production line in Queretaro, Mexico to supply the US site with electronic components.

Manufacturing synergies in Mexico

The new production capacity has been opened within the existing facility of our sister company Diehl Controls. This offers us several advantages:

  • Benefit from the current team’s local knowledge

  • Capitalize on their proven expertise in electronics

  • Learn best practices from them to optimize logistics and supply chains to the US.

Today, the new unit is manufacturing potted electronics sub-assemblies. These are sent to Lisle for integration into our HYDRUS 2.0 water meters. The finished products are sold exclusively to the US market.

An advanced manufacturing plan

The project was realized in record time. Launched in June 2023, the implementation progressed swiftly, enabling production to begin in early September 2024. The inauguration event took place on August 27, 2024 with the joint participation of both Diehl Metering and Diehl Controls boards and the whole project team.

To ensure quality and compliance, the innovative "Testing in a Box" concept is being used. This consists of a modular and standardized testing system that is prepared in Europe for easy set-up and running.

Today, the new unit is already at the ramp-up stage. It’s proof of the exceptional collaboration between Diehl Metering and Diehl Controls.

This achievement was made possible through the dedication and proactive efforts of our team members. Their commitment to excellence and willingness to take the initiative played a pivotal role in our success.

High-precision water measurement devices

HYDRUS 2.0 is a static ultrasonic water meter combining precision and connectivity.  It is used for industrial water measurement and as a home water meter. It can also serve as a submeter for water networks in commercial or residential buildings.

Through expert engineering, HYDRUS enables long-term measuring stability and remote reading. Beyond its credentials as an ultrasonic flowmeter, it precisely captures water volume. And with its high data granularity, HYDRUS is an important tool for detecting leaks and optimizing network efficiency.

Local for Local

The creation of the unit in Mexico is part of Diehl Metering’s ongoing commitment to sustainability. Our 7 Priority Programs are a roadmap to ensure the highest standards of corporate social responsibility. This includes Local for Local, our strategy to source parts and assemble our meters as close to our customers as possible.

Our partnership in Mexico is one example of how we use local talent to enhance local environments. This approach allows us to shorten our supply chain. In so doing, we reduce lead times, shrink our carbon footprint, and increase our competitiveness in the local market.

Our aim is to develop the production capacity in Mexico to 700,000 units annually for the US market. And if demand continues to grow, we’re ready to extend that capacity in the near future.
