GAIA – Fixed network

GAIA – Fixed network GAIA – Fixed network

FROM QUARTERLY READINGS TO HOURLY MONITORING

In the face of climate change, increasing pressure on water resources and growing performance requirements for public services, managing a drinking water distribution network now depends on more frequent and actionable measurement data.

In this context, GAÏA S.p.A., a public water operator responsible for drinking water and sanitation services in Italy, launched a transformation of its water network monitoring approach in Tuscany.

The objective was clear. Reduce water losses, also known as non-revenue water (NRW). Improve water distribution network efficiency. Strengthen operational performance through reliable, frequent and actionable data.

Transitioning from quarterly meter readings to hourly water consumption data became a key step toward real-time water network monitoring and a more effective water loss management strategy.

To continue delivering high-quality public service, we could no longer rely on occasional data. A detailed and continuous understanding of the network has become essential to sustainably reduce water losses and anticipate future challenges.

  • The challenge: reducing non-revenue water at scale

The challenge: reducing non-revenue water at scale The challenge: reducing non-revenue water at scale

GAÏA operates more than 7,000 kilometers of drinking water distribution network, serving over 400,000 inhabitants and managing around 500 facilities. Such scale requires continuous and precise network monitoring.

With only four meter readings per year, leak detection for water networks was delayed and visibility into overall network performance remained limited. Water loss management needed to evolve toward a proactive approach based on near real-time water network monitoring and more frequent consumption data.

  • A fixed AMI network to collect and leverage hourly data

To address these challenges, GAÏA deployed a fixed AMI smart water metering network based on 73,000 HYDRUS 2.0 smart water meters. Data transmission is ensured through the IZAR IoT Gateway Premium and mioty® IoT connectivity, enabling secure hourly data transmission across the entire distribution network.

IZAR Plus Portal and the Water Loss Management software analyze water consumption patterns and provide near real-time water network monitoring. Operational teams gain reliable insights to improve water loss management and enhance overall operational efficiency.

The transition from quarterly meter readings to hourly water consumption data has fundamentally transformed network management. Anomalies are detected earlier. Leaks within the water distribution network and on the customer side are identified faster. Field interventions are prioritized based on data-driven visibility of network performance.
