New legal regulations for a greener future
The EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) aims to reduce energy consumption to help shape a greener future. The directive, which consists of different steps, introduces a number of requirements that impact utilities and submetering companies. The two main obligations are that hot water and energy meters, as well as heat cost allocators, must be remotely readable; and consumers must be provided with insights into their energy consumption during the year. The purpose of these measures? Make consumers more aware of their consumption habits and motivate them to adopt energy-efficient behavior.
An urgent need to consume less
Across the EU, heating and cooling in buildings is one of the major contributors to carbon emissions, accounting for half of all energy consumed. Furthermore, heating and hot water alone account for 79% of total final energy consumption in EU households. The EED is therefore seen as a key element in helping to achieve the EU’s overall objective of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, and becoming climate neutral by 2050.
The revised version of the directive entered into force at the end of 2018. It establishes a roadmap for a 32.5% reduction in energy consumption within the EU by 2030, relative to consumption projections made in 2007.
How does this affect utilities and submetering companies? It means their measuring devices for heating, cooling and hot water must be EED-compliant at every phase of the directive. Ultimately, all measuring devices in their network must be remotely readable by 2027.
