Because of mechanical issues and for safety reasons, plastic was used only very rarely in the automotive industry. Due to the trend of miniaturisation, in terms of reducing weight, new fibre-reinforced plastics were developed. These plastics provide both, high stability and low weight. The overmolding and assembling technology combines the advantages of both materials. Overmolded and assembled components are considered to be superior to both materials in particular. The reduction of weight is about 40 percent compared to pure metal solutions.
