Sustainability Electromobility

Guiding principle of the electromobility competency team

The alternative generation, storage and distribution of electrical energy will be a mainstay during the expansion of a sustainable energy grid infrastructure. It is linked to an essential contribution to meet climate and environmental protection goals as well as cut back the dependency on crude oil based raw materials for power generation while also reducing the amount of crude oil based fuels used for traffic engineering. The globally operating Diehl Group develops solutions to meet the demands of alternative mobility and energy supply concepts at its corporate divisions Diehl Metall, Diehl Controls, Diehl Defence, Diehl Aerosystems and Diehl Metering.

Diehl Metall develops and manufactures semi-finished products and forgings along with rolled products made of aluminum, copper and copper alloys. The further processing in the own company (one-stop shop) provides Diehl Metall with a fully integrated value-added chain for metal-plastic compound systems for electrotechnical and electronic applications. The business unit Diehl Metal Applications pursues the strategy of positioning itself as a competent supplier of current-carrying components in battery packs for electrified motor vehicles.

The Corporate Division Diehl Defence stands for all activities in the fields of defence and security. Based on this product range, Diehl Defence also offers services, for instance the modernization of military land vehicles. Special battery manufacturer Diehl & Eagle Picher has essential know-how in the design of energy packs and energy systems and highly specialized manufacturing capacities for small and medium-sized series. Together with Diehl Landsysteme, this puts the Corporate Division in a place to make an essential contribution to the hybridization or electrification of the drive train of military vehicles. In addition, Diehl Defence develops, manufactures and sells high-grade packaging solutions for the hazardous materials transportation of lithium-ion batteries in the packaging system segment. As an accredited testing center of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und Prüfung - BAM), customers are sure to receive hazardous material packaging of the highest quality and customer-oriented support.

Outside the vehicle, at the interface to the grid, the skills of Diehl Metering come into effect. The constant communication of consumer data into the energy grid connected with the appropriate information and communication technology provides the basis for the creation of intelligent grids, so-called "smart grids". Together with the "smart home" activities of Diehl Controls, there is a broad base, for instance to connect electric cars with the energy grid or the mains in private households. The battery can be charged not only with electricity from the energy grid, but also with a private consumption model via self-generated power from a photovoltaic system with platinum inverters produced by Diehl Controls.

Electric energy storage plays an ever-growing part not only for the traffic on the streets, but also in the air. A cabin that is disconnected form the on-board power supply and energy-autonomous can reduce fuel consumption significantly because it allows more flexible operation of the aircraft. Beyond that, reducing the number of current-carrying cables should also result in a clear reduction in the weight of the aircraft. Together with partners, Diehl Aerospace develops an appropriate electricity storage concept, which also takes into consideration the supply and disposal infrastructure of airports.

Linking different fields of competence thus creates a broad knowledge base in the Diehl Group for additional development and new products in the field of alternative energy supply concepts.
